A Georgian Christmas with the Galeazzi Ensemble

About this event

Quartets by Mozart written on Christmas Day in 1777 and Haydn’s famous Bird and Joke quartets from his Opus 33 set, which were performed on Christmas Day in 1781 presented with a selection of 18th century carols.

The Galeazzi Ensemble

The Galeazzi Ensemble was formed in 1995 in order to explore Classical and Early Romantic chamber music using instruments of the period. The group comprises Lesley Holliday, flute; Richard Wade, violin; Virginie Guiffray, viola and Gareth Deats, cello; and, as well as performing works from the standard repertoire, it aims to introduce many neglected works to today’s audiences.

The group takes its name from the composer and theorist Francesco Galeazzi (1758-1818). Better known today for his theoretical writings, Galeazzi’s most influential work was a two-volumed treatise entitled Element teorico-practici di musici (1791-6).

Since they were finalists in the 1999 York International Early Music Competition The Galeazzi Ensemble have gone from strength to strength. They have performed on Meridian and BBC Television and BBC Radio 3, and have continued to give concerts for festivals and music societies.

Their debut CD The Age of Elegance was released by London Independent Records at the end of 2001 to great critical acclaim in the music press, followed by Views of Vienna which was released in 2005, also receiving much praise. Their following CD Haydn Revisited was released in 2010. A 4th CD of the music of Hummel and Kromme is in the pipeline.
