Discover the traditional craft of chip carving in this introductory workshop. One of Europe’s oldest decorative woodworking traditions, chip carving uses simple hand tools to create beautiful patterns in wood.
You will learn about the history of European folk carving while developing the fundamentals of chisel handling, chip-cut techniques and decorative pattern making. Working step by step, you will create your own carved decorative panel to take home. No previous woodworking experience is required.
The workshop will be led byAlice Ridgway, a woodcarver and gilder trained at City & Guilds Art School. Alice has a background in history and worked with the collections at the V&A for five years. Her workshops combine practical carving with a little art-historical context, in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. She regularly leads workshops at the Garden Museum, National Trust and National Saturday Club.
