Carving a Wooden Spoon workshop with Thomas Wheller
Join wood carver and industrial designer Thomas Wheller for a three hour Carving a Wooden Spoonworkshop held within the Intersection exhibition space.
In this workshop Thomas will give each person the suggestion of a spoon as a brief, helping to loosely carve a bowl and establish the profile of a spoon. Using knives, spoon knives and gouges he will then help finish the spoon.
Thomas encourages a simple approach for first time carvers, however if participants are feeling confident they can go wild with a fun design.
Thomas is proposing a workshop of ten people to make it an intimate experience and to maximise individual guidance.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with previous carving experience. This workshop is only suitable for adults as sharp tools are used.
All materials provided.
Duration: 3 hours
Price: £85
Places limited to 10 participants
About Thomas Wheller
Thomas is a designer based in South East London with a dual practice in industrial design and wood carving, together, the goal is to create playful forms.
Thomas’s work, furniture, jewellery, and objects - sit somewhere between utility and sculpture – grows from a desire to sharpen his skills and test his ideas. After graduating in industrial design in 2019, he stepped away from the rigour and technical specificity of his education and towards a looser, more intuitive way of working. Now, he is able to carve wood, bend and cast metal and free-form ceramics with few constraints beyond deciding which processes he wants to refine, the ideas he’s curious about, or, at times, the simple impulse to make something new.
