Turner & Constable at Tate Britain

Curator’s talk with Nicole Cochrane

Two of Britain’s greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other – Turner in 1775, Constable in 1776 – the art critics of the day compared their paintings to a clash of ‘fire and water’. Marking 250 years since their births, Turner and Constable: Rivals and Originals is a landmark exhibition which explores Turner and Constable's intertwined lives and legacies. Discover unexpected sides to both artists alongside intimate insights seen through sketchbooks and personal items.

Listen below and explore the key moments in the careers of two of Britain’s favourite artists, highlighting key works in the current exhibition.

Dr Nicole Cochrane is an art historian and curator. She is currently Assistant Curator of Historic British Art at Tate Britain and Assistant Curator of Turner and Constable: Rivals and Originals.
