Artists’ Open House 2026

So where do we go from here?

9/10 & 16/17 May, 11am - 6pm

@so_where_do_we_go_from_here

This group exhibition grapples with questions of the future at times of uncertainty - whether political, social, metaphysical, personal, or practical. The works reflect a shared pause: a reckoning with what has shifted and what remains unresolved. Together, they explore the search for meaning, guidance, and direction when familiar structures no longer hold.

Bainbridge Print has brought together artist printmakers who explore different ways of experimenting with the theme ‘'So where do we go from here?' and showcase the breadth of artists who come to print at Bainbridge Print Studios, each specialising in a different print medium.  From Lucy’s ‘Rainy Day’ Mokulitoprints touching on the subject of climate change to Michaela's large collagraphs concerned with the human condition.

“Where do we go from here?” is a question without a single answer – a meditation on movement, transition, and the fragile terrain between what has ended and what might begin. The works in this exhibition drift through landscapes shaped by grief, trauma, loss, and renewal, tracing moments of rupture, reflection, and quiet transformation.

Through moving image, installation, sound, performance, and sculptural elements, the artists create immersive spaces where time feels suspended, and boundaries between past, present, and possible futures dissolve. Here, uncertainty becomes a space to linger, to imagine, and to move forward – not with certainty, but with presence, attention, and openness to what might emerge.

At a point in time when the question ‘where do we go from here?’ could not be more profound, the artists of Changeable Beast collective have come together to propose art making and the discussion around it as one that thrives amongst a community and support system. Diverse practices that include drawing, photography, printmaking, film, performance, sculpture and installation are rooted in making and materials—concerns that are tangible, emotive and have agency. The work of the collective and of this exhibition is an active attempt to find common languages and points of connection. Here, the artworks and the artists together take on the responsibility of defining how we inhabit space for and with one another.

So where do we go from here? reflects on the existential dimensions of everyday life. We are continually confronted with profound experiences—loss of people or things, grief, and an awareness of our own fragility. Within this space, the artists engage with these realities in diverse and deeply personal ways. These experiences may be intimate or public, yet they remain connected through a sense of common humanity.

Grief often arrives in fragments. Loss can be both visible and unseen, while memory shifts between presence and absence. In the face of uncertainty, we cling to the illusion of control, only to witness its gradual unravelling as we encounter the limits of existence. By gathering remnants, images, gestures, and echoes, the works construct stories of both individual responses and those collectively shared.

Each artist draws on lived, witnessed or anticipated loss, capturing fleeting moments of vulnerability, sorrow, and remembrance, while also making space for the quiet joy held within treasured memories.

Aflame: the democracy of drawing

 After being invited to curate the beautiful Lutyens Room at Bell House I decided to focus specifically on drawing in response to the overarching theme of the exhibition “Where do we go from here?”.  Drawing remains one of the most democratic of all artistic mediums. It is accessible and affordable as well as being highly agentive, allowing the maker to express what captures their mind and eye through the metabolic processes of the heart and hand. Drawing also allows for a wealth of technical expression from the studiousness of a representational pencil drawing to dream like and luminous manifestations of the imaginative realms. Let’s not forget the dynamism of the black inked mark, the subtle smokey tones of graphite, the joie de vivre of colour pencils. Here, drawing is expressed across two and three dimensions as a manifestation of deep time, a sculptural tool and an act of enlivening, as well as an apotropaic prayer and an expression of sexy love. So, in answer to the question “Where do we go from here?” Defiantly, we draw.
