Book Donation - Helping the transition to secondary school

Donations to Bell House come in all sorts of different forms: some people give their time, some make financial gifts, others give their expertise. This week Bell House were given a set of a new children’s book: Curse of the Nomed.

‘Starting secondary school is nerve wracking enough without being late, but that’s exactly what happens on Nora, Stef and Jacob’s first day at Nomed Academy. The three children find themselves outside the assembly hall with a headteacher, who looks nowhere near as friendly as he did when they came to visit the school back in Year 6. Throw in ancient gods, a cursed librarian and a battle to save their souls and this is some welcome to Nomed Academy!’

This highly original book has been written in conjunction with Year 8 pupils from Four Dwellings School in Birmingham who took their own experiences of starting secondary school and combined them with a fast-paced rollercoaster adventure story that they hope will help Year 6 school children tackle their own challenges when making the transition to secondary school.

BB Taylor and Holly Bushnell, creators of the Murphy and the Monster series, helped bring the pupils’ ideas to life in this inventive and beautifully illustrated book. In addition, all profits from its sale go to Partnership for Children, a mental health charity that helps children communicate effectively, cope with anxieties and difficulties, and develop skills for life.

The thirty-five copies of this book which were given to Bell House have been passed on to the Year 6 class at Bessemer Grange Primary School. We hope they find the book a rollicking good read and a help when they come to make the transition to secondary school.
