BOOKBINDING: Junk Journal Binding

  • Bell House Dulwich 27 College Rd England, SE21 7BG United Kingdom (map)

EXPERIENCE LEVEL – BEGINNERS to INTERMEDIATE

Would you like to have go at bookbinding?

Have you got a collection of paper you don’t really know what to do with? Come and join Tania for a day of experimental bookbinding and make a unique book.

This session starts at 10.00 am and finishes at 4.30 pm. There is a chance of over-running so please allow some extra time at the end of the day.

Gather your bundles of junk and scrap paper and join us in our Print Room & Bindery.

Tania will introduce you to the fundamentals of book binding.

You will learn the essentials of paper grain, bone folding, punching and stitching.

This workshop is suited to anyone. No experience necessary but anyone attending must be able thread a needle and handle a craft knife! If you have some binding experience, then all the better. Beginners will start with Pamphlet binding or Japanese Stab binding and those with experience will be encouraged to use the equipment in the Bindery under their own steam with help from Tania should you need it.

*Please let Tania know in advance if you are working under instruction or without supervision.

Materials will be provided at this experimental workshop; however, you are encouraged to bring your own paper and scraps in order to make your own personalised books. This is an experimental workshop where you will be encouraged to try out various binding processes depending on your experience.

Bookbinding workshops at Bell House are designed to equip you with skills that you can build on at future workshops and work on at home.

These workshops are held in the Bell House Print Room and Bindery where we will be using materials and equipment kindly donated to us from Dulwich College and The London Library. Space is limited so book fast. These are probably the smallest book binding classes ever! ONLY 3 places available for lots of one-to-one focus time.

You will most definitely be needing a break so either bring along a sarnie or we can refuel on some biccies for half an hour.

Cost including all materials £60

ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED – NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED.

*PLEASE NOTE this workshop is unsuitable for under 16s and sharp equipment is used.

PLEASE BRING AN EXTRA LAYER AS THE PRINT ROOM MAY GET CHILLY

The workshop will be run by the Creative Director of the Print Room & Bindery – Tania Hurt-Newton.
