Exhibition: Intersection

  • Bell House Dulwich 27 College Rd England, SE21 7BG United Kingdom (map)

A three-day exhibition Intersection from the 6th - 8th November, at Bell House bringing together works from:

Bill Batten

Michael Ruh Studio

Thomas Wheller

Intersection is about placing craft and material-led practice in a fine art context, to foreground the conceptual rigor of materially grounded works.

The utilitarian objects of Michael Ruh and Thomas Wheller’s designs are reminiscent of sculptures. Bill Batten’s photos are hung in a salon style, black and white images which capture the refractory nature and translucency of glass are abstract, reminiscent of Dada photography, yet, his illusory images, are of the Michael Ruh Studio glassware and the lens the studio uses to make the glass.

All the exhibitors are at the intersection of craft, design, and sculpture. Their practices combine traditional processes with innovative approaches that, shown together, draw discussion about disciplinary boundaries.

In this exhibition they are also collaborating between one another, an approach that has opened up new possibilities, capturing the intersection between one artist’s response to the work of another, the photographs of glass change how we see the object. Hewn wooden tables have been made for these glass objects.

Engaging together extends beyond the approach to context. Wood used in the exhibition is from Bell House, and Thomas has been carving his sculptural objects out in the grounds over summer.

The ideas have been created together.

Intersection.
